Honouring The Autumn Equinox
A Sacred Invitation to Slow Down, Reflect, and Realign
The autumn equinox in the Northern Hemisphere generally occurs around September 22nd or 23rd each year. It marks the beginning of autumn and the transition to shorter days and longer nights a moment of balance when day and night are equal. As the wheel of the year turns, this sacred time marks the threshold into autumn, a season of letting go, slowing down, and turning inward.
While the equinox itself is just one day, its energy lingers throughout the season. This is a beautiful time to honour the shift to pause, reflect, and realign with nature’s rhythm.
Understanding the Autumn Equinox & The Wheel of the Year
Equinoxes occur twice a year, once in spring and once in autumn. The word equinox comes from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night). The equinoxes are solar festivals in the Wheel of the Year, and happen at the times of the year when day and night have become approximately equal length all over the world, with roughly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness.
The Autumn Equinox, specifically, marks the transition from the long days of summer to the shortening days of autumn. It signals a turning point where light and dark stand in perfect balance before night gradually grows longer than day. This moment of equilibrium invites reflection on the natural cycles of growth and release, light and shadow, activity and rest.
The Autumn Equinox is one of the eight sacred celebrations in the Wheel of the Year, an ancient cyclical calendar that celebrates the rhythm of the seasons and the changing energies throughout the year. This calendar is observed by many spiritual seekers worldwide, including pagans, Wiccans, and those simply drawn to nature’s cycles.
The eight festivals are divided into four solar events (the solstices and equinoxes) and four seasonal cross-quarter days. These include:
Winter Solstice (Yule) — the longest night and return of the light
Spring Equinox (Ostara) — balance of day and night, renewal
Summer Solstice (Litha) — the longest day, peak of the sun’s power
Autumn Equinox (Mabon) — balance once again, harvest and gratitude
And the four cross-quarter days: Imbolc, Beltane, Lughnasadh, and Samhain — each marking important seasonal shifts.
Living with the Seasons
The Wheel of the Year offers a framework to live more consciously with nature’s flow. Personally, I’ve found great wisdom in aligning with the seasons, allowing them to guide my routines and habits. When we listen to the Earth, we remember we are not separate from nature - we are nature.
Just as the trees, animals, and skies shift with the seasons, so do we. Our energy, emotions, and inner rhythms ebb and flow. Seasonal living has helped me ground more deeply into my own truth, and that’s why I include seasonal living practices in the online studio, so we can grow, learn, and shift together as a community.
Autumn Equinox Themes
Reflecting on Our Personal Harvest
Autumn is traditionally a time of harvest, gathering the fruits of what we have sown and enjoying them. The Autumn Equinox offers an invitation to take stock of our personal harvest. It’s a moment to reflect on what we have nurtured and accomplished over the past six months since spring. making it a great time to relfect
What in your life has blossomed?
What goals or dreams have come to fruition?
What projects or intentions might not have unfolded as planned?
These reflections are not about self-judgment or pressure to perform — they’re about awareness, acceptance, and gentle insight. We can honour the things that didn’t go as planned and still celebrate the quiet wins, small joys, and meaningful shifts. Growth isn’t always loud or visible. Sometimes, it’s in the subtle changes, the softening, the steady showing up.
This is a chance to give thanks for all that is nourishing us now, whether it’s a new routine, a deeper relationship with yourself, or simply feeling more grounded in your life. You don’t need to have made “big” changes to have grown. You are allowed to feel proud, grateful, and at peace with exactly where you are.
Finding Balance
With day and night in perfect harmony, the Autumn Equinox reminds us to seek balance within ourselves.
Where can you soften?
Where might you restore equilibrium between action and rest, giving and receiving, doing and being?
This seasonal shift also marks the slow transition toward winter’s stillness, gently inviting us to prepare, physically and energetically, for the slower months ahead. Whether it’s clearing space, setting cosy routines, or simply noticing what you need more (or less) of, this season invites mindful transition.
The Invitation to Release and Renew
In a culture that often celebrates constant productivity, autumn teaches a different lesson: surrender. Just as the trees shed their leaves without resistance, we too are invited to release what no longer serves us - habits, stories, roles, or obligations that weigh us down.
This release isn’t about loss, it’s about trust. Trusting the cycle, the fallow periods, the spaces in between. When we make space, we allow for something new to emerge.
Honouring the Autumn Equinox helps us navigate this transition with intention and mindfulness. It’s a chance to reconnect to ourselves and the natural world, grounding our energy and gently stepping into the sacred stillness that autumn offers.
Ways to Honour the Season
Here are some gentle ways to mark this sacred time:
Create a Simple Ritual
Honouring the Equinox doesn’t have to be elaborate; it can be a quiet, personal moment of intention.
Light a candle. Burn your favourite incense. Run a warm bath and surround it with soft candlelight.
Sip a soothing cup of tea slowly, letting the warmth ground you.
Wrap yourself in a blanket and sit in silence. Let your breath deepen. Let your nervous system settle.
This is a time to soften and come home to yourself. A time to slow down and tend to your body, your heart, and your energy. In a world that often pulls us outward, these small acts of self-care are powerful ways to honour the inward call of autumn and reconnect with what truly nourishes you.
Reflect with Journal Prompts
Take time to explore the gentle questions this season brings:
What can I surrender to?
What does it look like to give myself permission to rest?
What is no longer aligned with who I am becoming?
What do I need to release?
What am I grateful for? Can I show gratitude to myself?
Where have I quietly grown without even realising it?
What small, steady progress am I proud of?
How can I support my body, mind, and spirit as the days grow darker?
Write slowly. Let your thoughts unfold without pressure. This isn’t about finding perfect answers, it’s about listening.
Connect with Nature
Let the natural world be your guide and teacher during this time of change. Go for a mindful walk beneath the changing trees. Notice the colours, the scent of earth, the crunch of leaves beneath your feet. Gather acorns, pinecones, or fallen leaves. Feel the coolness of the air, the subtle slowing of the land.
You might sit with a tree, journal outside, or even garden.
Build a Seasonal Altar
Creating a seasonal altar is a beautiful way to celebrate the energy of this time.
All you need is a small space and a few meaningful items. I love to gather natural objects and create arrangements that reflect the shift happening in the world around me.
For your Autumn Equinox altar, consider including:
Autumn leaves, pinecones, conkers, or acorns you've gathered
Crystals like smoky quartz, carnelian, or citrine
Fruit, vegetables, and other plants that are abundant at this time of year, where you live
Candles in earthy tones — amber, rust, deep gold
Symbols of the harvest season
Items that represent the things in your life that you are grateful for, or a written note of what you’re grateful for.
Honour Rest as Sacred
Perhaps the most radical act in this season is simply to rest. Let yourself sleep more. Take slow mornings. Say no gently. Listen to your body's cues and honour its need to pause. Rest isn’t laziness, it’s the wisdom of nature moving through you.
Practice Yoga
Yoga is a beautiful way to honour the changing seasons, especially during the Autumn Equinox, where we are invited to go within and slow down.
Through mindful movement and breath, we can connect to the rhythms of the earth, steady our energy, and create space for reflection. As the days grow shorter and cooler, a slow, grounding yoga practice can help us turn inward, soften, and align with the quiet energy of autumn.
To support you in this, I’ve created a special Autumn Equinox Yoga Practice and Autumn Yoga Nidra available through the online studio.
Closing Reflection
The Autumn Equinox gently reminds us that we are connected to the cycles of the Earth, the ebb and flow of light and darkness, growth and release. As the days shorten and the world slows, may you find peace in slowing your own pace, wisdom in your reflections, and freedom in the art of letting go.
This season invites you to care for your inner self with kindness, to gather what truly nourishes you, and to release what no longer serves your path.
Like the trees shedding their leaves, you too have permission to let go.
No matter how you choose to honour this sacred time, through ritual, rest, or simple awareness, know that your presence is enough.
Wishing you a calm, nourishing, and soulful Autumn Equinox.
