Honouring the Winter Solstice
A Sacred Return to Stillness, Renewal, and the Rebirth of Light
The Winter Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere usually falls on December 21st or 22nd each year. It marks the longest night and shortest day, after which daylight gradually begins to increase.
This turning point has been celebrated by cultures across the world for thousands of years. From the Yule traditions of Northern Europe to the Dongzhi Festival in China, people have honoured this time as the rebirth of the sun, a moment of hope, reflection, and renewal amidst the deepest darkness.
While the solstice itself is just one night, its energy gently guides us through all of winter. It invites us to slow down, soften, restore, and reconnect with our inner light. Winter is a season of rest and reflection, preparing the soil of our lives for what will one day grow.
My Personal Journey with Winter
I’ll be honest, I’ve never been a huge fan of this time of year. I don't particularly like Christmas, and I definitely prefer the brighter, warmer weather, meaning that in the past, this time of year has been difficult for me. This season has felt overwhelming, busy, and heavy rather than magical, and I know many others feel the same.
I dreaded the winter so much, wishing it away and longing for spring, and I knew something needed to change. I didn’t want to spend time wishing my life away and feeling anxious, which is what led me to seasonal living! In a mission to get through the winter, I sought out ways to help myself. When I started aligning with Winter, I began to enjoy it so much more and realised our need for winter. In summer, we have so much more energy, but if we kept that same energy all year round, we would burn out. Winter provides a pause, a time to slow down, to stay in more and do less. I allowed myself to slow down and rest more. I embraced the quiet, the early nights, having candlelit bath rituals and cosy evenings in reading.
Through this search to enjoy the season, I began celebrating the Winter Solstice and Yule, which felt personally more aligned with me than Christmas. The Solstice celebrates the return of light, and for someone who really struggles with the darker nights, this definitely feels like something to celebrate! To this day, I still celebrate the Winter Solstice every year, and have spent previous solstice nights at Stone Henge, dancing and singing, waiting for sunrise, which feels truly magical!
Going from dreading the Winter to finding a love for it took me deeper into my connection with the seasons and why I’m now so passionate about seasonal living within our yoga practices. Winter can be hard for so many of us, but honouring nature and our connection with it at this time of year can be supportive and nourishing. Seasonal living reminds us that we don’t have to hustle through the darker months. We are allowed to soften, settle, and trust the natural rhythm of the Earth and of ourselves.
Ways to Honour the Winter Solstice
Spiritually and energetically, the Winter Solstice invites us to rest, reflect and release, as the dark months encourage introspection and inner work
Across cultures, it has been celebrated through fire, candles, evergreens, feasting, storytelling, and rituals marking the return of the sun. Today, it remains a beautiful opportunity to connect with nature, your own rhythms, and the subtle magic of winter.
You don’t need elaborate rituals; it’s about finding what resonates with you. Simple yet meaningful practices can be so powerful.
🕯️ Light a candle
Candles are a classic way to honour the returning light. You might light a candle on the evening of the Solsice to serve as a gentle reminder that even in the darkest night, the light is always returning.
✨ Create an Alter Space
This could be a small, seasonal altar to provide a visual reminder of the Winter Solstice. You can include:
Candles for returning light
Evergreens, pinecones, or holly
Crystals that feel supportive to you, such as clear quartz, obsidian, or amethyst
Small written intentions, notes of gratitude, or symbolic objects representing what you wish to release or nurture
Even a tiny corner of a shelf or a windowsill can become a sacred space for reflection.
📖 Journal
This is the perfect time to reflect inward. Use your journal to explore questions such as:
What do I want to release before the new year?
What brings me warmth and comfort in these darker months?
What intentions do I wish to set for the returning light?
Writing doesn’t have to be structured or polished; just let your thoughts flow and allow the act of writing to connect you with your inner wisdom.
🎄 Connect with Nature.
Going for a quiet walk to notice the crisp air, bare trees, or muted colours
Observing the sunrise or sunset.
Collecting seasonal objects like pinecones, fallen branches, or stones to include on your altar
Nature reminds us that rest, patience, and gradual growth are part of every cycle.
🛁 Self-care
This is the time to prioritise your own nourishment and rest. Self-care will look different for everyone, but make time to do what makes you feel good and relax.
For me, it often takes the form of bath rituals:
I light candles around the bath to symbolise returning light
Bring in crystals and essential oils
Set intentions for what I want to release, imagining the water washing it away
Taking 10 minutes to care for yourself through a warm shower, a cup of tea, or a quiet stretch is enough. Honouring yourself at this time of year is vital, as it nurtures your energy and aligns you with the season’s rhythm.
🧘♂️ Yoga
Yoga is a beautiful way to align with the slower, inward energy of the season. I offer three practices in the online studio, each designed to support reflection, restoration, and celebration:
Closing Reflection
The Winter Solstice is a sacred pause, reminding us that darkness is not the end but a space for rest, reflection, and renewal. By slowing down, connecting with nature, and celebrating the returning light, we can transform the winter months into a time of nourishment, self-care, and gentle growth.
Whether through ritual, journaling, yoga, or simply noticing the quiet beauty around you, the Solstice invites you to trust the cycle, rest deeply, and welcome the light that is always returning.
