What is Yoga Nidra?

Yoga Nidra is a form of guided relaxation that takes you into the deepest states of rest and regeneration.

Yoga Nidra is sometimes referred to as ‘yogic sleep’ and is both a process and a state. You can be in the “state of Nidra” which is a state of consciousness that occupies the borderline between waking and sleeping (hypnagogia). When we are able to rest in this Nidra state we can experience a new realm of consciousness where things change within the brain and our nervous system, often this allows us to rest more deeply and connect to our creativity.

But Yoga Nidra is also a process which uses a set of techniques put together to help you get into that Nidra state. The practice often leads you on a journey of expanded consciousness through the 5 sheaths/koshas of Self—physical, energetic/subtle, mental, wisdom, and bliss. Nidra practices often include; breath awareness, body scans and visualisation.

This practice of yoga/meditation is very accessible with no wrong way to practice, all there is to do is lie down, get comfortable and listen. Sometimes during the practice you might fall asleep, sometimes you might surf between wakefulness and sleep where you find the teacher’s voice becoming a blur (the Nidra state), other times your mind might have a storm of thoughts. Even if it feels like nothing is happening or “I can’t do this” – something is still happening! Regardless of how your practice goes, you will still experience the benefits of slowing down and practising Yoga Nidra. Trust the process, and know that whatever you are experiencing is enough.
